Renewing a driver's license is one of those tasks nobody enjoys because of documents, payments, lines... everything repeats every few years, without exception. What would happen if that process simply disappeared? For many, it seems like a dream, although there's a place in Mexico where this is already a reality. This way, thousands of people will be able to save themselves from a tedious and repetitive process.
Veracruz has taken an unexpected step that could change everything, especially for those who are over 50 years old. The proposal is already generating anticipation, especially among those who've been driving for decades and have always kept up with their renewals. With this new option, visits to the module every three years and frequent payments are over.

Permanent license for those over 50: What should you know?
This new option is available only in Veracruz and if you're 50 years old or older, you can apply for a permanent driver's license without ever having to renew it again. The benefit isn't automatic, but it is accessible. If you renewed your license in January or February of this year, you can request the change at no additional cost.
The only requirement is to have turned 50. Although traditional licenses are granted from age 18, this lifetime version is only for those older than that age.
The price and the advantages this system offers
The permanent license has a single cost and although the amount varies depending on the type of license, the long-term savings are considerable. For example, type A license (public transportation) costs $2,070 MXN. In comparison, renewing every three years would mean a much higher expense.
Here are the current costs of the permanent license by type:
- Type A: $2,070 MXN
- Type B: $1,932 MXN
- Type C: $1,656 MXN
- Type D: $1,380 MXN
In contrast, regular renewal costs exceed those values in just a few years. In addition, you won't have to go through procedures or bring documents every so often.
How to get it?
You just need to go to any module of the Government of the State of Veracruz. The service hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (8:00 to 16:00), although it's recommended to go early. Bring your basic documentation and proof of payment and, in some cases, they might ask you for a simple medical evaluation.

In general, the process is straightforward, but this benefit still doesn't apply throughout Mexico. If you live in Veracruz or are about to turn 50, this is excellent news for you. Many hope it'll soon be replicated in other states. Having a permanent license isn't just more convenient, it's also fairer for those who've complied all their lives.
