Official: Good news if you receive SNAP, new stimulus checks and benefits

Since this past May, SNAP beneficiaries have been receiving new payments in many American states

Many families in the United States rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to cover their basic needs. This program is key to helping those with low incomes. Now, there are some new developments that could further improve that assistance.

Since this past May, some states have launched new benefits that complement SNAP. Specifically, those who already receive the program could see an increase in their financial support. This is great news for the most humble families, who will now have greater financial support.

What is SNAP and how does it work?

SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, helps people and families with limited resources. It provides benefits to buy essential foods. The money is loaded onto a card called EBT, which works like a debit card to shop at supermarkets.

This program has been essential in improving food security. However, economic difficulties keep increasing for many. That's why additional support has been designed to add to SNAP and ease the financial burden.

New benefits and stimulus checks: What should you know?

Since May 23, 2025, five pioneering states are implementing a system that combines SNAP with additional payments. California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, and New Mexico are the first to do so. If you are a SNAP beneficiary in those states, you don't have to complete any extra paperwork.

Stimulus checks are additional payments to support families facing the rising cost of living. For example, New Mexico offers up to $750 per household, while California gives between $300 and $600. These amounts are automatically added to your EBT card or arrive by direct deposit.

If your state isn't on this list, don't worry. Other states will begin to incorporate these benefits in June. In addition, older adults and families with dependent children may also be eligible for this combined support.

To receive the benefit, you must meet certain basic income and residency requirements. If you already receive SNAP, enrollment is usually automatic. However, it's important that you check your text messages, emails, or notifications from your local social services office.

You don't need to go to an office in person unless you're asked to do so. In that case, you'll be asked to update information to keep your eligibility. This improvement in financial assistance aims to provide greater stability to the most vulnerable families.

If you think you could benefit, don't hesitate to check your status as soon as possible. Staying informed is key to not missing out on this opportunity that can make a real financial difference.
