Sergio Camello, a youth player at Atlético de Madrid, had to find a place at another club last year. After having played in almost all of the youth categories of the red-and-white club, the Madrid striker decided that Rayo Vallecano should be his next destination. A team that he was clear about wanting to return to after having been on loan in 22/23 and with which he connects like no other he had ever connected with.
Last season he played 31 games and scored three goals , helping the club from Vallecas to stay in the first division for another year. An unparalleled achievement, as it is a very humble club, with few resources, a stadium that needs more than a coat of paint and in a city like Madrid. Overshadowed by the Atlético de Madrid - Real Madrid duo, Rayo Vallecano continues its love affair with the First Division, where it will celebrate its centenary.
Sergio Camello, more sincere than ever
The interview conducted by Rubén Cañizares, a colleague from ABC , shows us Sergio Camello more 'naked' than ever. He talks about his beginnings and what it's like to deal with a dressing room like Atlético de Madrid where there are more egos than in one like Rayo. His parents have always been important and those humble roots have allowed him to be the Olympic champion he is today.
His double in the final of the Olympic championship, elevated Spain to Olympic gold as it had not done since Barcelona 1992. From then on it was inevitable to think that the good Camello was going to go unnoticed, as shy as he may be. Spain was once again Olympic champion and in large part thanks to the Atlético de Madrid youth player.
In a different interview to the one mentioned above, he said that he was not expecting the call from Santi Denia. It was the coach himself who called him to warn him that there was a possibility that he would be called up. At that moment Sergio Camello did not fully believe it , but he began to get nervous, nerves that were multiplied when he saw his name on the list of those called up.
Always with your feet on the ground
The best moment of the interview happens when Rubén asks him about money, a topic that is always controversial and often brings controversy. In this case, Sergio Camello gave us all a lesson in understanding what is most important regarding this topic.
"My twin brother and I have always appreciated everything our parents gave us. For us, it was a celebration when we were kids and we went once a month to eat at the Chinese restaurant downstairs."
"Of course I indulge myself, but I don't waste money. For example, you won't see me wearing designer clothes and buying a 600 euro t-shirt, when my mother earns 700 euros a month. That's why I take the 600 euros and give them to my mother."
Sergio Camello tells us here about a reality that many forget . Either because of bad company or because they are the result of letting themselves get carried away by the adrenaline of the moment. In this case we see how there is an important education behind it and a guy with his feet on the ground who knows perfectly where he is and what he wants.
Finally, let me make a personal comment: it is nice to see how there are people who do not forget where they come from and their past. It is important to know what we want and where we are going, but without forgetting where we come from and why we are where we are.
