Atlético de Madrid makes a decision regarding Rodrigo Riquelme's future: confirmed

The red-and-white club doesn't want to rush with the homegrown player

The future of Rodrigo Riquelme, player of Atlético de Madrid, has been hanging in the air during this January transfer window. The forward has been one of the most mentioned names in exit rumors due to the limited playing time he has had this season. However, despite the inquiries and rumors indicating his possible departure, he is ultimately staying with the red-and-white club.

Riquelme has played only 720 minutes in 18 matches this season, which has raised doubts about his future. Atlético de Madrid, however, has decided to keep him in their squad for now. Although his situation in the team is not ideal, Simeone doesn't consider it the right time to part ways with him, especially with the season still in full swing.

Offers for Riquelme, but Atlético prefers to retain him

According to information from Italy, Riquelme was offered to Napoli by an intermediary, a move that made some noise in the market. The Italian club, which was looking for reinforcements after Kvaratskhelia's departure to PSG, was in contact with Riquelme's camp. However, Atlético de Madrid's stance was clear: they were not willing to let him go in this January transfer window.

The sporting director of Atlético, along with Simeone, believes that the team needs to keep their squad intact while they are still in the fight for the season's objectives. Despite the lack of minutes, Riquelme remains a young player with a lot of potential, and the club also doesn't want to make a hasty sale.

Riquelme's situation and his future

Even though his departure was a possibility, Atlético's stance has been firm. Riquelme has not had the chance to shine as much as expected, but Simeone still trusts in his talent and long-term potential. The young player remains part of the club's plans for the future, although at the moment his participation in the first team will be limited.

If Atlético de Madrid is forced to make sales to finance possible signings in the future, Riquelme could be one of the players in the spotlight. However, for now, the club prefers to retain him and work on his development, trusting that he can contribute more in the coming months.
