Josema Giménez is one of the most iconic players of Atlético de Madrid in the last decade. Having just turned 30, Josema himself has admitted to reaching a key level of maturity in his career. The Uruguayan center-back, in an interview, has reflected on the moments when he was close to leaving the red-and-white club.

In a conversation with the Uruguayan program La Quinta Tribuna de AUFTV, Giménez confessed that there were two occasions when he could have left Atlético, but he decided to stay. "I wish I had the mindset I have today five years ago," the defender acknowledged, making it clear that time has given him perspective on those decisions.
The Two Times Giménez Was Close to Leaving
The first great opportunity to change scenery came in 2018. "I stood my ground and said no," Giménez stated, indicating that at that time his desire to continue at Atlético de Madrid was unwavering.
However, after the pandemic, between 2020 and 2021, the doubts were greater. "That's when I really thought about it a bit more. I discussed it with Cholo Simeone, with Miguel Ángel Gil, but when one is going to make these kinds of decisions, a lot has to be weighed," the Uruguayan explained.
At that moment, Giménez admitted that he didn't feel entirely comfortable and that the idea of a change was on his mind. "I felt the need to leave because I didn't feel comfortable," he said honestly. But after talking with his family, the club, and his coach, he realized that his real desire was to stay. "It was a moment of ego that didn't let me see beyond, I don't regret it, on the contrary, I made the right choice and today I'm very happy."
Premier League Destination? The Mystery of Giménez
The Uruguayan center-back didn't want to give too many details about the clubs that tried to sign him, but he left some clues. When asked if any of those offers came from the Premier League, his response was clear: "One yes, and another no."

The interviewer tried to delve deeper, mentioning the possibility that the other destination was Germany, but Giménez simply replied with a "No," leaving the mystery open. "I'm not going to say where the possible second exit was," he concluded the matter with a smile.
A Pillar of Atlético de Madrid
Today, Josema Giménez remains a key piece in Atlético de Madrid. His dedication, leadership, and grit have been essential for Diego Simeone's team, and the Uruguayan feels more confident than ever about having made the right decision.
