Atlético de Madrid have witnessed an unexpected situation that has left players and fans stunned, including Koke. Sofyan Amrabat, one of the stars of the last transfer market, has decided to sign for Fenerbahçe, despite Diego Simeone's efforts to attract him to the colchoneros. The decision surprised many, as the Argentine coach was in direct contact with the Moroccan international to convince him, but the efforts were not enough.
Simeone tried to convince Amrabat personally
Atlético de Madrid's interest in Sofyan Amrabat was no secret. Following the sudden departure of Arthur Vermeeren to RB Leipzig, the red-and-white team needed to strengthen their midfield. The arrival of a midfielder was essential to maintain balance in the squad and Simeone saw Amrabat as the perfect man for that role.
According to Fabrizio Romano, one of the most respected journalists on transfer matters, Simeone made several attempts to contact the player directly. It is known that the Argentine coach made several calls to Amrabat during the last week of the summer transfer window.
However, and to everyone's surprise, despite the interest of Simeone and the club itself, Amrabat opted for Fenerbahce. Atlético, limited by salary restrictions, could only offer a loan with an option to buy, something that did not convince Fiorentina, the Moroccan's home club.
The tough competition between Atlético and Fenerbahçe
Although Atletico Madrid moved quickly to try and sign Amrabat, Fenerbahce were also interested in the midfielder. The Turkish side were able to offer better financial terms and, above all, an outright purchase, which ultimately tipped the balance in their favour. For Atletico, it was difficult to agree to a permanent transfer at that time, which limited their options.
Atlético did not want to risk including a mandatory buy-out clause, especially since Amrabat's signing was an emergency solution. Although he was a talented and experienced player, the club considered his arrival to be a complement and not a leading role. Without time to make more calculated decisions, they preferred not to overcommit.
This stance was decisive. Fiorentina, seeking a definitive sale, rejected Atlético's loan offer, and Amrabat opted to go to Turkey. The decision undoubtedly surprised Koke and the rest of the team, as they had hoped that the club would be able to close the signing.
