The new way to renew your driver's license in Texas was just confirmed by DPS

License renewals in Texas are changing: The DPS portal will no longer be used and traditional methods will not be accepted

Texas has taken a decisive step toward digitizing its most common procedures. Since June, renewing a driver's license will be a completely online process, with no need to visit offices or send documents by mail.

This change is part of the federal push set by the Real ID Act, a regulation that requires new identifications to access government buildings or domestic flights. Texas has taken the opportunity to modernize its system.

A total change in license management

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has stopped using its traditional portal. Starting June 1, 2025, all procedures must be done exclusively on the TxT platform. Renewing a driver's license, replacing lost cards, or changing your address are now handled only through this digital tool.

Even vehicle and boat registrations are now managed through TxT. This affects all residents of the state. If you were used to doing it by mail or in person, it's time to adapt to the new digital system.

Why now? Key advantages of the TxT system

DMV offices have been known for their long lines and endless waits. With TxT, that chaos disappears, as everything is now centralized on a single platform that promises to be more secure and efficient. The goal is clear: eliminate bureaucracy, simplify procedures, and improve the experience for citizens.

TxT has been designed from scratch, avoiding the errors of the previous system. In addition, you can access it from any device. Whether it's your phone, tablet, or laptop, the system adapts perfectly.

How to create your account and what documents you can manage

To get started, you need an account on TxT. You only need to enter your personal information: email address, phone number, Social Security number, and a valid state ID.

Once your identity is verified, you'll be able to use the platform for many procedures beyond the license. Among them:

  • Change the address on licenses or identification cards.
  • Request a duplicate in case of loss or theft.
  • Check or update your emergency contacts.
  • Register a vehicle or a boat.
  • Manage services linked to Parks or Motor Vehicles.

Keep your data updated

An important tip: make sure your personal information is always up to date. Changes not reflected in TxT can cause blocks or delays in procedures.

The state insists that prevention is the best way to avoid complications. Digitization promises agility, but it also requires responsibility from the user.
