The Cívitas Metropolitano stadium , known as Wanda Metropolitano when it was built, has been the home of Atlético Madrid since 16 September 2017. The Atlético fans, who were used to the famous Vicente Calderón stadium , had to move and leave their former home. After six years of construction, Atlético de Madrid opened one of the most impressive stadiums in the world.
Its characteristics
The Cívitas Metropolitano , when it was founded in 2017, had a capacity of just under 67,000 spectators. This meant that the stadium could accommodate more than 10,000 more than the Vicente Calderón. However, the club's growth was enormous and requests for season ticket holders grew year after year.
The stadium's capacity has therefore been growing, reaching 70,460 seats today. This makes it the third largest stadium in Spain, behind only Camp Nou and Santiago Bernabéu. In June 2019, it was included by UEFA in its list of "Elite Stadiums", the highest distinction in terms of sports venues.
The stadium has 1,000 parking spaces inside the building itself and 3,000 outside. The lot is 88,150 m² and the flag flies in the southwestern part of the platform in tribute to the fans.
A unique atmosphere
Despite the fact that, as many fans say, the "mystique" of the Vicente Calderón has been lost, the Metropolitano has an incredible atmosphere night after night. The chants and celebrations begin hours before the matches in the surrounding area, where the game begins off the pitch. The fans paint the stadium red and white at each match, a state prepared to host the biggest events in European football.
In 2019, the Champions League final was already played there and UEFA, delighted with the result, has the Metropolitano as one of its favourite venues. In short, a stadium of the level of a club that is one of the best in all of Europe.
The new City of Sport
Atlético de Madrid has been training at the Cerro del Espino facilities for several years, but that will change before long. Majadahonda has been responsible for hosting the team from Madrid, with large facilities, complete with a field with capacity for 3,500 spectators. This is where Atlético de Madrid's reserve team plays its home games.
However, a few months ago, the City of Sport project was presented together with Madrid City Council. This great architectural work will host Atlético de Madrid, as well as fans and visitors who want to enjoy its facilities. There will be a High Performance Centre for the red-and-white entity, a Leisure and Multi-Sport Space and, finally, a Service Centre.
