Axel Witsel in Danger: Gil Marín Wants to Steal a Transfer from Real Madrid

Sam Beukema joins the list of possible new defenders for the red-and-white club.

Madrid´s Atlético has started to plan its strategy for the upcoming summer transfer market , and one of the names that stands out in its list of targets is Sam Beukema. This information was very recently revealed by SkySports journalist Rudy Galetti. Aparently, the Dutch centre back, currently at Bologna, has aroused strong interest from the red-and-white club looking to strengthen its defense.

Sam Beukema, 24, has become established in the Italian A Series thanks to his physical power and his ability for the aerial game. These qualities would perfectly fit into the defensive style that Atlético´s coach, Diego Pablo Simeone, so much values. Reinildo Mandava, César Azpilicueta and Axel Witsel are already of a certain age and, besides, all of their contracts are coming to an end, so Atlético must move in the market.

Witsel's Replacement

This possible transfer would come at a key time, as the intention is for Beukema to replace Axel Witsel in the red-and-white defense. The Belgian, who has played an important role in Simeone's defense, is out of contract at the end of the season. This would leave a vacancy that the club intends to fill with a player with great long-term potential.

The Dutchman hasn't only caught the attention of Atlético, but is also closely followed by other European giants such as Real Madrid and Juventus. Competition from these clubs would mean an increase in both the price of the player and the expectations of the contract. Something that, based on experience with the red-and-white board, doesn't usually turn out well.

Need to rejuvenate the defense

The need to strengthen the defense at Atlético has been a constant, although in this last market the transfer of Le Normand was made . Beukema, who stands out for his imposing physique, good aerial play and ability to anticipate plays, could fit in perfectly. This way, Josema Giménez and Robin Le Normand would've more competition and the level of the squad would rise.

For Atlético, transfer Beukema would represent a bet for the future, incorporating a defender with experience in a competitive league like Serie A. However, overcoming competition from clubs like Real Madrid and Juventus will not be easy.
